Global Blue Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC)

Let customers with a card from abroad pay in their own card's currency, with the exchange rate determined by Global Blue.

A customer paying with a card issued outside the UAE can choose to pay in their card's own currency instead of AED. This capability is called dynamic currency conversion (DCC).

The exchange rate comes from Global Blue, Network International's currency conversion partner, and the customer sees the rate and the exact amount before they pay. As a merchant, you are still paid in AED.

DCC works on Visa and Mastercard cards, for payments made online, on orders in AED.

DCC at the counter

This page is about online payments. For DCC on a Network POS terminal, see Network POS User Guide.

How it works with multi-currency pricing

Global Blue can provide two services, and your relationship manager can switch on either or both.

Switched on for youWhat your customer sees
Multi-currency pricing onlyA customer outside the UAE sees the price in their local currency, and can change it. See MCP (Multi-Currency Pricing).
DCC onlyA customer whose card is eligible is offered their card's currency after they enter their card details.
BothMulti-currency pricing comes first. A customer who pays in the currency it shows is not offered DCC. A customer who changes back to AED may be offered their card's currency once they enter their card details.

Wherever Global Blue is set up, it automatically provides multi-currency pricing rates. Your customers experience no difference.

What your customer sees

  1. The customer reaches the payment page for an order in AED.

  2. If multi-currency pricing is switched on and the customer is outside the UAE, the price is shown in their local currency. They can pay in it, or change back to AED.

  3. The customer enters their card details. N-Genius reads the start of the card number to find the card's currency and to check that the card is eligible.

  4. If it is, the page offers two choices: pay in AED or pay in the card's currency. Each shows its amount, and the exchange rate is shown with a statement the customer accepts. The statement says the choice is final.

  5. The customer chooses and the payment continues as usual.

If they choose their card's currency, their card is charged that amount in that currency. If they choose AED, the payment is in AED, just as it would be without DCC.

When DCC is not offered

The payment goes ahead in AED, with no offer, when:

  • The card is not Visa or Mastercard
  • The card was issued in the UAE, or is on Global Blue's list of excluded cards
  • The order is in a currency other than AED
  • The customer has already chosen a currency through multi-currency pricing
  • The payment is a MOTO payment or a recurring payment, or another charge you start yourself on a card on file
  • Global Blue does not return a rate in time

Captures, voids and refunds

What you doWhat happens
Take the payment straight away (purchase or sale)The customer is charged the amount they accepted.
Authorise now, capture laterEach capture is in the currency the customer chose, at the rate on the day you capture. If you capture days later, the amount in the customer's currency can differ from the amount they accepted. You can capture in parts, and each part gets its own rate.
Void the paymentThe whole payment is reversed, in the original amount and currency.
Refund the paymentThe refund is always made in AED. You can refund all of a DCC payment or part of it. A payment made through multi-currency pricing can only be refunded in full.
❗

Refunds come back in AED

The customer's bank converts the AED refund back into their card's currency at its own rate on the day. So the amount they get back may not match what they paid, even for a full refund. Customers who notice may contact you, so make sure your support team knows.

If you capture authorised orders some time after the customer pays, bear in mind that the amount they see on their statement can differ from the one on the payment page. Capture promptly if you can.

What you earn

On each payment a customer converts, you receive a share of the markup. It is worked out daily and paid at the end of the month. Your share is set in your agreement with Network International.

In your reports

A payment made with DCC or multi-currency pricing shows the currency the customer paid in, the exchange rate and the original AED amount, and whether DCC or multi-currency pricing applied.

Switch it on

DCC is switched on by Network International, not in your own settings. Ask your relationship manager for this feature. You can have multi-currency pricing, DCC or both.

For developers

If you use the hosted payment page, Pay by Link or one of the e-commerce plugins, there is nothing to change. The offer appears on the payment page, and N-Genius handles the rate and the conversion.

If you integrate with the Direct API, you build the offer yourself: you ask for a quote, show it to the customer and send their choice with the payment. See Global Blue DCC on the Direct API.
